An Anki Alternative for YouTube Vocabulary: Where the Complexity Actually Lives

The standard advice on language-learning forums, when someone asks how to actually remember the words they meet in videos, is two words long: "Get Anki." The advice is not wrong. It is also, by now, a genre — search "Anki for beginners" on YouTube and the popular tutorials count their views in the millions. When the introduction to a tool is an industry of its own, that is information. It doesn't mean the tool is bad; it means the tool has a learning curve its users build businesses around explaining.

Usual disclosure: Piccard is mine, one of those alternatives, and reading r/Anki is part of my job. So this is not "Anki is bad." Anki is the honest gold standard of this field, and it earns the title. The claim here is narrower: for one specific job — keeping the vocabulary from the YouTube videos you watch — most of what Anki asks you to configure is overhead the job never asked for, and a tool can be built that starts where the job starts: at the subtitle line.

The part Anki gets right

Credit first, because it is real credit. Memories decay fast (fast enough that the decay itself has a name, the forgetting curve), and reviewing just before the drop, stretching the gaps each time, is spaced repetition, among the most consistently supported techniques in learning research. Anki has packaged that, free, for nearly two decades, and it hasn't stood still: recent versions moved to the FSRS scheduler family, as Anki's own FAQ explains.

Piccard's review runs FSRS-6, the same generation. On the science there is nothing to argue about and nothing to sell you. If your Anki setup works and you enjoy it, this post has nothing for you; the rest is about the wrapper, not the engine.

The job, stated precisely

The job is not "learn with flashcards." The job is: you are watching YouTube with captions, a line lands just outside your vocabulary, and you want those words in long-term memory — sentence and moment attached — without an evening of clerical work.

Anki is a general-purpose memory tool. It will hold anything, which means it knows nothing about videos in particular. The words have to be carried in, and for YouTube the classic route is a pipeline, and it is countable:

  1. pause the video and capture the line (an extension such as Language Reactor)
  2. export the capture to csv or zip
  3. move the file to the machine where Anki lives
  4. import it with field mapping
  5. put the media folder where that device's Anki expects it
  6. repeat steps 3–5 on the next device
  7. sync
  8. fix whatever didn't map

Counted one honest way, that is eight steps from subtitle line to reviewable card on your phone. (The count is an example, not a benchmark; your pipeline may be a step kinder.) Somebody maintains that pipeline, and it isn't either of the two apps.

The complication is a market, not a myth

"Anki is too complicated" is not a fringe opinion; it is a keyword with a search results page of its own. Deckbase sells itself on exactly this — "FSRS-level retention without configuring add-ons" — and there is an entire site called ankialternative.com. The complication is real, and the people who hit it hardest are not casual users; they are the ones doing serious volume.

In the r/Anki threads we collect (my product research), deck-management pain has a recurring shape. Filtered decks confuse people reliably enough to be their own sub-genre of question. And the memorable one: a user who found more than eight thousand orphaned media files left behind after an export/import cycle. Eight thousand files that were once somebody's words.

And import day is only the start. Vocabulary from video arrives in the order you watched it — a deck per channel here, a deck per video there, a shared deck someone else made — and each deck brings its own options group, its own new-cards-per-day limit, its own line in the sidebar. The maintenance doesn't end when the pipeline works; the pipeline working is what creates the maintenance. That is the honest cost of a general tool doing a specialized job: you pay in configuration once, and in housekeeping forever.

Simpler is not the same as specialized. "Anki alternative" is a contested search; "Anki alternative for YouTube vocabulary" is an intersection nobody occupies, because it isn't a flashcard question at all. It is a question about where the cards come from.

What the specialized version looks like

The honest limits

YouTube only, captions required. Other players and Netflix are out of scope. Within YouTube the extension needs a caption track to read. A video without captions has no lines to tap, so it fails honestly rather than guessing.

Built for English learners. The card side is English-first: definitions and example sentences target English learners, with Korean, Chinese, and Japanese carrying the translation side (a few European pairs in the web app). If your decks are law, medicine, or kanji — cloze deletions, shared decks, an add-on for everything — that is Anki's home turf, and you should keep it.

You give up the ecosystem. No add-ons, no deck sharing, no styling your cards in HTML. That flexibility is the point of Anki and also its price; the trade here is narrow-and-working for anything-and-maintained-by-you.

The short version

The engine is settled: both tools schedule with the FSRS family, and that argument ended years ago. What differs is the distance between watching and remembering — eight steps of pipeline you maintain, or a tap on the line and a keep-click. If you enjoy Anki, keep Anki; it will outlive us all.
